Bad things happen to us.
Especially when we are children, we don’t have control over all the events, circumstances and actions of others that can cause us emotional and physical harm. Sometimes those events are little but hurtful.
Other times those events may happen over periods of our life. And then there are those devastating events that change our lives forever; rape, molestations, school shootings, acts of war or crime, serious accidents, etc.
These moments can stay with us for the rest of our lives, but they don’t have to hurt us every time we think of them. We don’t have to let them keep controlling how we feel.
There is a way to let it go.
Sure, the song may drive you a little batty at this point, but why do you think the song, “Let it Go,” swept the nation? I think it’s because many people can relate to having something in their life that is holding them back, making them avoid others, and trying to hide for protection or to protect someone else.
Trauma disrupts and it continues to fester and inhibit growth if it keeps you down. Therapy can help you remove the destructive ties to a memory that seems to hold on to you.
Trauma: What It Looks Like
Trauma manifests in symptoms like nightmares, insomnia, flashbacks, panic attacks, anxiety, etc.
It leads to patterns of behavior that keep us feeling stuck, sad, misunderstood, numb, disconnected, and sometimes desperate.
Trauma doesn’t just mess with our mind; it gets stuck in the body, too. Muscle aches, pain, fatigue, headaches, and more (that can’t be traced back to physical injuries or illnesses) can be signs of trauma.
Recovery: Reprocessing and Removing Trauma
Talking to a trained professional can help alleviate some of that hurt and despair.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) help to reprocess the trauma and remove it from the body.
Recovering from trauma isn’t just talk therapy.
You’ll learn skills and techniques for coping with the symptoms you currently endure.
Mindfulness, gratitude, and resourcing help to move you past the painful moments.
